Washington DC Family Portraits: Happy December!!!

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Every year I am under a lot of pressure to come with a memorable holiday card.  Every year I am told “I can’t wait to get your card!  It always my favorite.”  The pressure!   Three years ago I caught Bella choking Lisee as they lounged in their best holiday attire.  Two years ago I had the perfect very close-up portrait that showed them exactly they are.  Bella looking all sparkly-eyed and sassy.  Lisee looking like she had better things to do.  And last year I was totally stumped, and then it snowed.  My lightguy (husband) held the lights as we got a perfect picture of the girls in the snow.  This year I decided on our own version of American Gothic, which didn’t work out.  It was FREEZING, my lights kept blowing over (broke an umbrella), and the kids were not happy with it.  After 10 frames, I headed inside to thing of something new.  And I finally sent my card in for printing today.  It is pretty priceless–the kids love it.  I’ll post it after the holidays.

But here is our outtake from American Gothic (OK, but not good enough):

Abby & Josh called me excited for a maternity session.  They had to come out my way since they are under construction, and the day was perfect for a little bit of outdoor shooting (and some indoor).  They are absolutely adorable together and I can tell are going to make beautiful, loving parents.  It’s written all over them–their happy faces, their sweet demeanor and loving gentleness with each other.

Oh Sophie.  Seriously.  Could you be any cuter?  I met Sophie as a newborn, then at six months old, and now we rounding it out at just over a year.  Dan and May are so in love with their happy little muffin.  I am too–she is really, really sweet!

Dan and May are planning on making an album of the sessions, which I am excited to get started on.  It will be so, so good!

Northern Virginia Photography: All right here in Great Falls

Friday, November 19th, 2010

After much encouraging from my previous model Marlo, Gaby decided to let me get her belly shots before her delivery in the next two weeks.  Eva is already estimated at 8 pounds (holy cow)!  Gaby looks beautiful, as always, and she played right along and together we got some gorgeous images in her little afternoon session.

Jacqui, Alex, and I have done our little sessions for four years now (really?). We love this family, in so many ways. Gracious. Giving. Real. They are wonderful, and we are blessed to have them in our lives.

A few years ago over a busy girls dinner, Jacqui asked me to do some images for her family, including some that were black and white with just little red highlights (AKA spot-coloring). Catching me on a bad day when I was obviously feeling a little under appreciated and stressed, I let her know I don’t do that cheesy %#% and she obviously doesn’t get what I do. Of course, I apologized and compromised with some desaturation and sepia toning. We continue to have a good laugh at it.

Leaning more traditional, I try to throw in some fun. I think they will like it!

Peabody Library: Baltimore Wedding Photography: November 13th 2010: Mike & Meghan

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Having already shot Mike & Meghan during their engagement session, I knew they would be very sweet, laid back, and great to spend the day with. They know each other well, and feel very comfortable in each others’ arms. Love is good, and sweet, in this family. I was so glad to be a part of their day.

This was a wedding full of favorites and firsts. I have never shot at the Peabody Library in Baltimore before. I look forward to going back again. It is stunning, even if they do NOT let photographers, or clients, have access to 99% of it. You get the dance/reception floor only. But for gorgeousness, as you sit and look up, it almost can not be topped.

I did my first little food shoot for Treats by Erica. Meghan saw the pictures on my blog and ordered them as wedding favors. uh… yum!. So yummy that I got to use the scraps left behind for the wedding ring shot.  I think having local chocolate covered pretzels as favors is brilliant.

My new favorite event band–James Gerard Orchestra— is simply because not only did they kick it from GaGa to Sinatra , they played for THREE straight hours. They took one break all evening (dinner), and then played, and played, and played. They even went 15 minutes over their scheduled time. Talk about customer service and creating loyalty. Even after 10 hours on my feet, I was dancing behind the camera.

I met Marno Muth at Foundation Conference for the first time in person. He pinged when he saw my work on FWForum, realizing I was a local VA photographer that wasn’t just doing the cookie-cutter photography. He second shot this wedding with me, and I can’t wait to put our images together and get them delivered to Mike and Meghan!

DC Family Portrait Photography: I’m so lucky

Friday, November 12th, 2010

“You make your own luck.” Sage words from Tyler of Wirken Photography.  Tyler has been my mentor at two different workshops and I just can’t say enough good about the man, his photography, and his motivation to get that shot.  I was so glad to spend 3 beautiful days in Kansas City (what a great town–who knew, except the people that live and have been there) honing my skills and listening to a host of some of the most talented and forward-thinking photographic minds on this continent.  And of course, spend a little time with Tyler.

You make your own luck.  You have to be there at the right place at the right time, but with intuition and listening, you can be there.  Great photography doesn’t just happen.  It doesn’t just happen when you buy an expensive camera and gorgeous lens.   You need patience (thank you Candice Cusic for the reminder).  You need to know your equipment, and be ready.  And you need to listen with your ears, eyes and heart (thank you Still Motion) to the families and people you are with.

I am inspired and can’t wait to watch Meghan and Mike say their vows tomorrow in Baltimore.

Before I left I had a few photo sessions with some beautiful families.  Here they are.

Carson & Cooper.   I was warned in advance that Cooper was very shy with strangers.  As it turns out, he isn’t shy with a stranger that nibbles on his toes and rolls around on the floor.  He thought that was A-OK!  Carson has grown up beautifully, and he is quite the Jedi fighter and cowboy, depending on the props in hand:

Caleb & Dylan. John and I became great friends while I was still working as a CPA in NYC. John lived across the hall from my roommate, and then me. He is so easy to be with, and the memories I share with him are some of the best I have in NY–he was as flexible as I was. I can’t say enough good about him, his kindness, his easy laugh, and his love of his family. He met his beautiful wife Kim shortly after I left and now has adorable boys. I was so glad when they came to VA to visit my family (and get some great pictures)!

Sydney: I met Sydney one year ago and was welcomed into their warm home. Sydney, now walking sometimes falling, is simply stunning with her big blue eyes, sweet smile, and happy-go-lucky demeanor. They were so easy to be with, and I loved being a part of their morning:

Metro DC Family Portraits: Crazy X Four

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

Since I starting booking my fall shoot schedule in January this year, I know it would be a busy fall for me. I am so grateful to have fun clients, and am sorry to refer on so many people this time of year.

I need to catch up on my week’s shoots before I head to the Foundation Conference next week (which I am so looking forward to–I am ready to get some inspiration from some of the most-talented, hardest working photographers in the industry).  I have three more shoots before I leave, and a wedding when I get back.  NOVEMBER!!!

Here are my four for the week:

Meet Lucas, and his brother Mason.  When we moved to VA 6 years ago, Leslie was one of the first families I met.  Lucas and my daughter became fast friends, and Bella had her first marriage proposal, left on our answering machine, from Lucas.  She called back to say OK.   Now they are big kids, and can’t believe they actually did that.

These boys are the most naturally athletic kids I have ever seen.  Well, except for rollerblading.  It looks like they may need to work on that. : )  Love these kids:

Natalie, Caroline and their new brother Ryan showed me a good time around their new home. Natalie is an absolute crack-up, camera hog, and fun kid. Caroline is a sweet kid trying to catch a little light from her big sister–I’m so glad a I had few minute with her and her “Man”–her little lovey. And Ryan is delicious at 1 month old. Exactly.

Oh Daniel…. What a sweetheart. He has so many smiles, and happiness. We played in and around their home, then headed to the Masonic Temple in Alexandria.  It’s just beautiful.  I was so glad to meet this family–they are really wonderful!

Declan has just been blessed with a baby sister Cordelia. I met Declan when he was just a wee thing, and now he is well into his twos, and full of fun and goofs. His sister, well, she just couldn’t be any sweeter and I was so glad to pop into Georgetown to have a peek.  Great, great family…
