Editorial Photography: Vashon Sheepdog Trials

The Vashon Sheepdog Trials touch a soft spot in me. The human-dog interaction mixed in with the consuming desire for the sheepdog to herd is something to behold.

Love. It’s deep love all the way around.

Vashon Photography: Summer

This family is real–genuine, loving and fun.  I could gush over them on and on, drooling over Anya’s Spicy Green Mango Line (fashion with a heart and soul), the creative juices flowing through the well-read daughter to create her own book, and the adventurous souls of the both boys, but I’ll let their images speak for them.  They shine through.

Did I mention a really naughty kitty?

As I scrolled through looking at the images from this family session, a wave of gratitude rolled over me. I met this family when Max was just born. I have returned to capture a little moment in their lives every year since. I love how the photos show the changes, year after year. What do they do? What did kids play with? How did they interact? How did they love? They aren’t pretty portraits–they are real moments. They are perfect to me.

It all goes so fast…

Earlier this year in the spring, Cheryl from Vashon Dance Academy asked me to help her with their poster for this year’s production of Mary Poppins Ballet. Dancers and their shapes…

Vashon Allied Arts needed a photo of the trio for their upcoming marketing campaign. Times like this (all of these) I really appreciate the people my work brings into my life.

Vashon Family Photography: Spring Adorableness

Vashon’s spring is green with longer days beneath deep blue skies or the layers of clouds mold to shape around mountains and hills, or the open spaces in between. The earth starts to wake up with unfurling ferns, prickly nettles, and budding blossoms along with the birds after their slow winter with sounds of territorial fighting and hunting. Witnessing the change on my walks or while working on our property to bring it closer to its native roots (good bye concrete and grass! Hello native plants!). And then I was so glad to meet and photograph these little lamb, and their keepers for a month.

I learned that orphaned lamb need to eat, a lot. Watching them suck down their bottles and come in for cuddles was precious. Even more so, the family dog, not a sheep dog, took these little lamb in as her own, to love and cherish. Priceless.

Vashon Family Portraits: 47th Parallel

Oppressive, wet gray clouds can hang over our shortened December days, or we can get a day like Sunday–crisp and cool with that magnificent low sunlight that peaks through the trunks of trees or across the Sound, creating blindingly bright reflections off of the water. Winter is so unlike the high, endless summer, when the sun wakes and bakes us from 5AM to 9PM and then lingers through twilight until 10PM.

This time of year on the 47th parallel is magnificent. And I am so glad Esther and her family had me come by their home in the heart of Vashon to enjoy the morning. It could not have been planned any better.

What a beautiful family. In all ways.
