Virginia Family Photography: DC Commercial Photographer: Love. And more love.

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

There are certain families that wear their hearts on their sleeves, in their arms, in their hands… This family shows their love everywhere. It’s really, really, really sweet. Kyle is about to welcome a baby brother. I can’t think of a better place to be!

And speaking of love, I can’t say enough about the women at Beloved Yoga. They opened up a community yoga center, wanting to make a place where everyone could practice and find their own peace. They are developing a new site and I headed their photography (and video : ) ) efforts. The video was my first, and I can’t wait to share once they have it online.

Loka Somasta Sukhino Bhavantu–it just rolls off the tongue and brings me a peace. How can you not love the translation: “May all beings everywhere be happy and free. May the thoughts and actions of my own life, contribute in some way, to the happiness and freedom for all”.

Now can I just get to a class?!?

DC Fall Family Portraits: Times Two

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

I really am so lucky to have people invite me into their homes and lives, and share their time with me. It really makes me want to create a book where I step into the lives of all types of Americans from all over our nation, and do a pictorial essay of each. I envision a book where by the end, it is so obvious how similar we all are at our core and within our families no matter our race, religion, or plight. The love we have and the dreams we make are all so similar.

I’ll keep that idea brewing in my mind for when I get a little more free time…

I stepped into the lives of two families this week, and they are both so beautiful!

Meet Jack and Claire. Jack, proving to be a two-year old boy, was very busy playing with cars, trucks, dirt, and doing everything but sitting still. Claire is a sweet, delicious thing that LOVES her Mommy and despite missing her nap, was happy to hang and enjoy the beautiful day.

And we did it!  They wanted one family shot with ALL four of them.  After chasing Jack down and giving a sweet bribe, we did it!

Mojy called me in March making sure she made it on to my fall calendar this year for her family pictures, and I’m so glad she did! I think we got a great sampling of their lives, right now, and it would make a perfect little book to keep going back to. They are a family in love.

Mojy is, as always, an amazingly warm hostess and has a wonderful, open home. Through her, I’ve learned I LOVE Iranian food (even the bulgar with ghee, until I realized it had pulverized turkey in it–so much for secret ingredients…) and the traditions she has shared with me.

Alexandria Family Portraits: One wonderful family

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Paula called me early in the summer with her gift certificate in hand (a lovely gift–right?). Her son would only be home from college through August and she would really like to have a session. We talked about what my session is like, and how we could do this with their two children. I suggested coming to her home in the morning and getting a little morning time together–a little fun over breakfast.

I love being with families where the love is so there and present it can’t be missed. And this completely defined this family.

I think they turned out pretty wonderful:

Great Falls Family Portraits: Times Two

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

With summer upon us, families are getting warmed up to get their kids sunkissed cheeks in some family photos. I only wished I lived closer to the beach so I could do these fun, goofy, and real sessions on the beach too.

I hadn’t seen Theo in a couple of years. He blew me away. I have never met a more gregarious, interactive and fun boy. He was absolutely charming. And his sister Madison is no longer a tween, but an engaged, beautiful young woman. She and her Mom are so sweetly in touch, and respectful. I can only hope to have that with my girls. Kudos to this family:

And then Amanda and Sabrina! I can relate so well to this family–two girls, closer in age, and so into that girl world of dressing up (ten times over), dancing, giggling, and being silly. Amanda LOVES my camera and pulled a few poses I won’t ever be able to recreate. Sabrina, much more tentative about her time in the spotlight, sweetly showed me her moves. They are so, so precious. The line of the day from Amanda, “Aren’t you done? We are supposed to go to the Tavern for brunch.” Even the best models have to eat at some point.

Headshots? I do that too!

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Christine is a wonderfully beautiful woman, whose wedding I shot not so long ago.  She, too, has her own photography business (www.christinemeulemans.com) and needed some head shots for sites and marketing.  I was very happy to do it, even though it’s out of my normal workflow.  (I won’t do the standard corporate headshots–there are plenty of studios that do it and come right to your door.)

Christine came to my house, and we headed outside.   My kids headed up to the vacant property behind us, so they “helped” with the session.  pppffttt….
